His obituary can be found in the New York Times printed Aug. 2, 1883.

A graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1848. A summary career biography of him is given in entry #1400 in Cullum's Biographical Register of the Graduates of the Military Academy; it is online, at http://bit.ly/Cullum1400

He was appointed Colonel of the 7th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment by the Massachusetts Governor and he held that command from March 29, 1863 to July 27, 1864, the end of service of the 7th Regiment.

He did have a leave of absence as a result of a gunshot wound to his right thigh and a gunshot contussion of his right calf, received on May 3rd, 1863 at the Battle of Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, VA.

Married Feb. 16, 1853 in Erie, PA.
June 25, 1860 U.S. Census shows him, wife, children in San Francisco CA living in a boarding house. June 14,1880 census shows them in New York City.

Son of Dr. William & Anne Nancy (Dunn) Johns. He of Chambersburg PA & Erie PA; she of Antietam MD.(though her gravestone says Parkhead, MD)

Col. Johns was a pioneer of California. Made his way from PA to PA via a ship through Isthmus of Panama to San Diego, arriving Jan 1, 1850. At Sacramento he was a member of Whig party and was chosen presidential Elector in the Scott-Pierce campaign; was a Captain in CA Guard; a member of Vigilantes II, 1854.
