James was killed when the ignition switch of truck he was driving failed and the truck stalled on the railroad crossing just east of the stockyards. The rear end of the truck was struck by the westbound "Second 603" train. Indications were that the ignition switch was inoperative and that James had wired around it in lieu of repairs.
