The Reverend Russell L. Boisvert, 66, Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Uncasville, died Friday, (April 27, 2001) in The William W. Backus Hospital, Norwich. He was born Dec. 15, 1934, in Willimantic, the son of the late Joseph A. and Lydia (Roy) Boisvert. He graduated from St. Mary School in Willimantic, St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, and attended Fairfield University. He earned a master of arts degree from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA. He completed his philosophy and theology studies at Christ the King Seminary, St. Bonaventure, NY. Father Boisvert was ordained a Priest for service in the Diocese of Norwich on May 7, 1964, in St. Patrick Cathedral by Bishop Vincent J. Hines. His first assignments in 1964 were as Assistant Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel, Storrs, and St. Paul Parish, Waterford. He was appointed Assistant Pastor of St. Patrick Cathedral Parish, Norwich, July 3, 1965. While there, he served as Assistant Norwich Diocesan Director of Vocations and Norwich Area Catholic Youth Organization Director. Father Boisvert was named Principal of Notre Dame Girls High School, Norwich, on Jan. 4, 1967. In 1972, Notre Dame High School was merged with St. Bernard Boys High School, New London. He was appointed Principal of the new coed diocesan school, St. Bernard High School, located in Uncasville, Sept. 1972. He served there until April 29, 1978, when he was named Pastor of Most Holy Trinity Parish in Pomfret. Three years later, on Sept. 11, 1981, he he was named Pastor of St. Joseph Parish, North Grosvenordale, and its Mission Church of Sacred Heart, Thompson. Since Sept. 18, 1989, Father Boisvert served as Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Uncasville. He also served as Catholic Chaplain at the Community Correctional Center and the Raymond L. Corrigan Correctional Institution in Uncasville. He also served in diocesan positions as a member of the College of Consultors, Presbyteral Council, and as an Advocate on the Diocesan Tribunal. Father Boisvert's survivors include an uncle, Oscar Roy of Sherbrooke, Canada; and numerous cousins. Calling hours will be held TODAY, April 29, 5-8 p.m., in the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St., Willimantic. Father Boisvert's body will be received Mon., April 30, 2 p.m., in St. John the Evangelist Church, 22 Maple Ave., Uncasville, where he will lie in state. A Parish Mass will be celebrated April 30, at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tues., May 1, 11 a.m. Bishop Daniel A. Hart will be Principal Celebrant. Luncheon will follow in St. John Church Community Center. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cemetery Rd., Willimantic.
