Elizabeth Musgrave Merrill Furness, 87, a mezzo soprano with the Chicago Symphony during the 1930s, died Thursday at her home in Middleburg, Va.

Mrs. Furness was born May 15, 1898, in Duluth, Minn. She was educated in England, France, Germany, the National Cathedral School in Washington, and Miss Windsor's School in Boston.

In 1920, she married the William Coit Hubbard. The couple lived in Lake Forest and had two daughters. After divorcing Hubbard in 1930, she married Thomas Foster Furness of Chicago, a prominent stockbroker.

In the 1930s, Mrs. Furness was a liedersinger, or mezzo-soprano, with the Chicago Symphony. In 1943, the couple moved to Middleburg, where Mrs. Furness later founded the Piedmont Vineyards and Winery.

Survivors include two daughters, Marie Merrill Ewing and Elizabeth Hubbard Worrall.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Middleburg, Va.
