New Jersey's First Lady 1954-1957, also known as Sophie B. Meyner. Maria Sophia Bäumle moved to America in 1883 with her mother and with two sisters. Her parents were Robert Bäumle, born in 1849 in the village of Harpolingen, and Franziska Oliva Thüring, born in 1853 in Istein near Lörrach. At the age of 11 Maria Sophia had to work in the silk mills of Paterson NJ. There she met her later husband Gustave Herman Meyner, a loomfixer in the silk industry whom she married in 1906. The couple moved to Phillipsburg later where they raised up three children. From their mother Sophie Baumle Meyner, the children learned "you can lose your money but you never can lose your education". The Meyners gave them a good education: one son became an Engineer, the second a Lawyer and then went up the ladder to be the 44th Governor of New Jersey, and the daughter made a Bachelor of Arts.
