Services for Charlotte Davis Parrott will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2006 in the First United Methodist Church of Alexandria with Dr. Tommy Dunbar officiating. Graveside services with burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston, under the direction of Hixson Brothers. Visitation will be held Thursday at Hixson Brothers, Alexandria from 5-8 p.m.
Charlotte Davis Parrott of Alexandria, La., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006. She was born in Winnfield, La., in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Huey P. Long, Sr. and grew up in Ruston as the youngest daughter of Mr. Robert Wesley and Charlotte Long Davis of Ruston. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dr. Robert Upshaw Parrott, and her sister Mary Olive Green.
Charlotte Parrott is survived by her three children, Robert Davis Parrott and his wife Mary of Ruston, Mary Charlotte Parrott Broussard of Houston, Texas, and John Kemp Parrott and his wife, Laura, of Monroe. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Robert Franklin Broussard, Charlotte Davis Broussard, Clark Davis Parrott, Katherine Elizabeth Marie Parrott, and her nieces Martha Charlotte Green Talley and Roberta Green Hinton, and nephew Regan William Davis Green, as well as many other cousins.
Charlotte was a graduate of Ruston High School and attended Breneau College in Gainsville, Georgia. Mrs. Parrott transferred to Louisiana State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree. She became head of the Voice Department of Northeast State College in Monroe, Louisiana before returning to LSU to do graduate work in music. There she met and married Dr. Robert Upshaw Parrott on November 15, 1936. Shortly after, the young couple moved to Alexandria, Louisiana, where Dr. Parrott practiced medicine until his death in 1966.
Charlotte was a devoted wife, mother and friend. Throughout her life, she made considerable contributions to the City of Alexandria and the State of Louisiana, and spent endless time and effort in helping others.
While attending college, she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and Honor Council. By nature she was warm-hearted and magnanimous and very proud of being the first winner of the "Miss Brenau" contest.
She was a soloist and choir member at the First United Methodist Church in Alexandria. In addition, Charlotte taught Sunday school for thirteen years.
As an active member of the Matinee Music Club, Charlotte served as president and was elected winner of its "Community Service Award" in 1965. Active in Community Concert Association, she was a worker for thirty years. Charlotte established scholarships to help music students attend LSU, Bay View, and Universities over the state.
Charlotte was a member of the Executive Board of LSU School of Music for seven years and Vice President of the LSU School of Music Alumnae for two years.
She was also involved with Little Theatre, Art League, Central Louisiana Historic Society, and Girl Scout Leader.
She served as Medical Auxiliary President in 1956 and 1957; a Charter Member of the Louisiana Camellia Society; Rapides Parish Camellia Society President; a member of the Alexandria Junior League, serving as president in 1946-47. As an avid gardener, Charlotte was a member of the Deep South Garden Club, president in 1951-52, and Town and Country Garden Club. Also she loved the game of golf.
She was extremely active in genealogy, was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, Daughters of the Colonial Wars; Daughters of the American Colonists; Daughters of the American Revolution; Vice Regent of Loyalty Chapter, the National Society of Magna Charter Dames; and Daughters of Royal Decents.
Spending her summers in Bay View, Mi., Charlotte sang in the Bay View Assembly Chorus for 35 years, was a member of Women's Council, Music Committee Board Member of many years, and belong to Northern Michigan Panhellenic. She was selected by Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of American Musicians.
Charlotte will be remembered for her wit, her profound wisdom, her warm and friendly spirit, her keen interest in her family, her constant goodness and generosity, her twinkling eyes and her magical manner, and her ability to entertain with a song or a story that only she could do.
