BARRY. Rev. Edward F. Barry, M.S., 82, of The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, 85 New Park Ave., Hartford, died Friday (Dec. 20, 1996) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He was born in Waterbury, son of the late John and Nellie (O'Brien) Barry. He attended schools in Waterbury before entering the La Salette Seminary, Hartford, in September 1931. He made his first profession of vows July 2, 1938 at La Salette Novitiate, Bloomfield. He continued his studies for the priesthood at La Salette Seminary, Altamont, NY. He was ordained a priest June 19, 1943 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Albany, NY, by The Most Rev. Edmund F. Gibbons, Bishop of Albany. After ordination, he served in The La Salette Preaching Ministry in Milford, Iowa, and Bloomfield. He served as assistant pastor at St. Francis Church, Phoenicia, NY, from 1944- 1947, and Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Hartford, from 1954-1956. He was appointed Master of Novices and Superior, Bloomfield in 1960. In 1966 he was appointed Superior at the La Salette Community, Hartford. During these years, Father Barry served as Chaplain to the Hartford Police Department for 20 years. He also served as Catholic Chaplain to the Connecticut State Police Department, and the Knights of Columbus Council #2533, Glastonbury for several years. He served as Pastor of Our Lady of La Salette Church, Brooklyn, CT, from 1976-1989. He was named to St. Mary Church, Jewett City, and was appointed Director of Prison Ministry for the Diocese of Norwich in 1990 by The Most Rev. Daniel P. Reilly, Bishop of Norwich. Father Barry retired to the La Salette residence in Hartford in 1995. He is survived by several nieces and nephews, William and Susan Pritchard of San Angelo, TX, Charles ''Chick'' and Donna Pritchard of Farmington, Albert and Dorothy Turner of Burlington, Charles and Dolores Ruducha of Kensington, William and Elaine Turner in Florida, Paul and Sophie Barry, Jack and Ruth Barry, Donald Barry and David Barry, all of Southington. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday (Dec. 23), 10:30 a.m., in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, New Park Avenue, Hartford. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Friends may call at the La Salette Community House, 85 New Park Ave., Hartford, today, 3-7 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette Retirement Fund, 85 New Park Ave., Hartford, CT 06106-2184.
