JACKSONVILLE — Julia Burnett Bryant, wife of former Florida Gov. Cecil Farris Bryant, died Sunday. She was 78. She died at Baptist Medical Center from complications of lung cancer.
From 1961 to 1965, she represented Florida as its first lady, presiding as hostess over many occasions, including the Southern Governors Conference and the National Governors Conference.
After moving to Jacksonville in 1965, she served on the boards of the Visiting Nurses Association, the Home for the Aged and was a member of the Colonial Dames.
Mrs. Bryant is survived by her husband of 56 years; three daughters: . . . ; and two granddaughters.
"Julia Bryant was a warm and charming woman who brought to her family and the state a warmth that served us all." Gov. Lawton Chiles said through his spokeswoman, April Herrle.
The daughter of Daniel Felix Burnett Jr. and Eunice Lovett Burnett, Mrs. Bryant was born April 26, 1918, in Madison. She graduated from Florida State College for Women. Prior to her marriage in 1940, she taught English at Leon High School in Tallahassee.
The Bryant family lived in Ocala for 20 years, during which time she was a founder of the Junior Women's Club, a member of the First Methodist Church, taught elocution and was a substitute teacher.
