Harold Arundel was the son of Robert Arthur LaFount (1856-1940) and his wife Emily Ethel Hewitt (1861-1956). He was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. and was of French Huguenot and English ancestry.
Harold married Alma Luella Robison on 10/20/1903 in Logan, Cache, Utah, the daughter of Charles Edward Robison and Rosetta Mary Berry.

Harold Arundel LaFount served as Secretary of the Navy.
He served in this capacity in the cabinet of President Warren G. Harding 1921-1923, and after Harding's death, was retained in this cabinet position by President Calvin Coolidge from 1923-1929. Coolidge appointed Harold to serve on the Federal Radio Commission and the LaFount family, including daughter Lenore, moved to Washington D.C., followed by George Romney whom she later married (George later became Governor of the State of Michigan).
By the end of his term, Harold LaFount had achieved success in enlarging and modernizing the fleet and establishing a naval air force which would grow to become a potent component in the war with Japan.
