Born in Winchester, Virginia, Mr. Gamble came to St. Louis in 1816. He was first connected with the old St. Louis Bank in a clerical capacity. Governor William Clark appointed him clerk of the circuit court and recorder of deeds and he held that office continuously for eighteen years. After that, having been admitted to the bar, he acted as legal agent of the public schools and was the trusted counselor and advisor of many of the pioneer citizens of St. Louis, He was closely identified with various business enterprises and was the postmaster of St. Louis from 1849-1854.

Archibald was the brother of Hamilton Rowan Gamble who was
appointed governor of Missouri by Constitutional Convention in 1861 as the office had been declared vacant. (this additional information provided by Anna Jaech)
