U.S. Senator. He graduated from Southwestern University, in 1900, studied law at the University of Texas, (1900-01), was admitted to the bar in 1907 and commenced to practice law in Meridian, Texas. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and in the wholesale grocery business. Entering politics, he was a member of the Texas Senate, (1907 to 1913) and a member of the Texas State Railroad Commission, (1913 to 1923). In 1923, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate serving until 1929. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until retiring in 1952 and then engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
