U.S. Senator. He attended the Lynnland Institute in Kentucky, where he learned the printing business, and published a tri-weekly newspaper in Tyler, Texas. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1872, practiced law in Tyler, Texas, and was Assistant Attorney General of Texas (1881 to 1883). In 1891, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John H. Reagan, serving until 1892. He was re-elected again as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving from 1895 until 1901. Withdrawing as a candidate for re-election, he resumed the practice of law until his death at the age of 78.
