US Senator. He graduated from Jackson College Tennessee, in 1847, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced to practice law in Shelbyville, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, and judge of the seventh judicial circuit of Tennessee. He also was a professor in the law school at Lebanon, Tennessee, and a member of the Tennessee State Senate. In 1871, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1877. Not seeking another term, he engaged in mining in Mexico and was murdered there at age 56 by bandits.
