U.S. Senator, Rhode Island Governor. After receiving a law degree from Northeastern University in 1931, he opened a law practice law in Providence, Rhode Island. Entering politics, he served as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives (1935 to 1937), Rhode Island Assistant Attorney General (1937 to 1938 and 1940 to 1944), and 54th Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor (1944 to 1945). Upon the resignation of Governor James McGrath in 1945, Pastore was elected the first Italian-American Governor of Rhode Island, serving until 1950. During his administration, the state's first primary election law was enacted, and a corporate income tax was issued to combat water pollution and a $20 million bonus for World War II veterans. After leaving office, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving (1950 to 1976). Not seeking re-election, he served on the board of directors of Providence-based Columbus National Bank until retiring in the late 1980s.
