U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He was a wheelwright craftsman in Norristown, Pennsylvania, when he entered politics serving as a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1799-1800) and the Pennsylvania State Senate (1807-11). In 1811, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the Twelfth and Thirteenth Congresses, serving until 1814. After leaving Congress, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Michael Leib, serving 1814-21. He was again a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1823-26) and collector of customs at the Port of Philadelphia (1841-42). Retiring from public serve, he lived on his farm until his death.
