U.S. Senator. Successful in the in newspaper business, he was publisher of the Pennsylvania Juniata Sentinel in 1852 and editor-owner of the Harrisburg Telegraph in 1853. Entering politics, he was a member, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1854-56). During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a Captain in the 15th U.S. Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he relocated to South Carolina, engaged in railroad construction and was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate and served (1873-79). Not a candidate for reelection, he engaged in various financial venues in Washington, D.C. Returning to Pennsylvania in 1886, he engaged in the construction of electric railways and electric lighting plants, until his death.
