Zachariah Perrin was one of the pioneers of the town of Berlin, VT, to which he emigrated in the spring of 1789, returning to Connecticut the following winter to bring his family with him. The site of his first log house on the Perrin farm in Berlin by a glorious spring is a historic landmark. That he chose his land wisely though it was a wilderness is easily seen by the casual observer, for the large Perrin farms of himself and sons are the choicest of the green and fertile fields of Berlin. - Source: SAR application of Benjamin Dudley Wheeler (his 2nd great grandson)

Zachariah is the grandfather (through his daughter Mary) of the famous American war hero, Admiral George Dewey, who was most well known for the battle with the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay during the Spanish American War, sinking all 8 Spanish ships, while sustaining very little damage to his own ships, no dead and only 8 wounded.

Zachariah Perrin, with his family, came to Berlin from Hebron, CT, in March 1789 and settled in the east part of the town, where his grandson, J. N. Perrin, now lives. He came with two yoke of oxen, up the Connecticut and White rivers, to Brookfield, which was then the end of the road. His sled was loaded with provisions and his wife and two children. From Brookfield his route was a line of blazed trees, and the snow was from three to four feet deep. Mr. Perrin was an influential citizen and aided in the settlement and organization of the town (Berlin), and support of the Congregational church. - Source: "Gazetteer of Washington County, VT."
