James Theodore Talbot accompanied John Charles Fremont in 1843 and again in 1845 on the latters pathfinding journeys to the West. Talbot kept a detailed Journal of the trips and his letters to his mother and sister are available in the Library of Congress. Talbot was garrisoned at Fort Sumter in 1861 and accompanied President Lincoln's emissary, Robert Chew, to Charleston on April 8,1861 to deliver Linclon's last missive to the Governor before the start of hostilities on April 12, 1861.
