U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Ohio in 1830, he became editor and publisher of the Findlay Democratic Courier and was auditor of Hancock County, Ohio (1846 to 1850). He also was a member of the Ohio State Senate (1851 to 1852). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1853, practiced law in Findlay, Ohio, and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1856. With the advent of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army in 1861 and rose to the rank of Colonel in command of the 57th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving (1867 to 1871). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed law practice until his death.
