U.S. Senator. He attended New Oxford Academy, Washington College, graduated from Hampden-Sidney College in 1815, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced to practice law in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Entering politics, he was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons (1821 to 1823, 1826) and judge of the Superior Court of North Carolina (1827 to 1836). In 1836, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Willie P. Mangum, serving until he resigned in 1840. After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law, was solicitor for the fifth judicial district of North Carolina, and engaged in literary pursuits until his death.
