U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1885, managed the family farm, taught school for several years and was editor-publisher of the Clinton Caucasian News. He served in the North Carolina State Senate in 1890, was president of the National Farmers’ Alliance and Industrial Union, (1894-95), chairman of the People’s Party State committee in 1894 and a member of the executive committee of the University of North Carolina, (1891-99). Studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1899 and commenced to practice law in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1895, he was elected as a Populist to the United States Senate, serving until 1901. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was chairman of the Populist National Executive Committee, (1901-04) and was affiliated with the Cotton and Tobacco Cooperative Marketing Association, (1923-24). He then resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C. and Maryland, unti his death at age 75.
