U.S. Congressman. CSA Congressman. He was a member of the North Carolina state legislature for ten years (1848-1858) until being elected as a United States Representative from North Carolina in 1859. As the Civil War began, he left office in 1861 and served as a colonel in the Confederate Army. From 1864 to 1865, he was a Representative from North Carolina in the Confederate Congress. Following the War, he served again in the the State Legislature (1865-1866). In 1871, he was elected once more to the United States House of Representatives for two terms. He briefly served again in the state senate in 1879.
