South Carolina Governor. He studied law in South Carolina, was admitted to the bar, and practiced law in Union, South Carolina. Entering politics, he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives House of Representatives (1810 to 1812). He also was the Union City District Attorney (1812 to 1815), Circuit Judge (1815 to 1824), Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals (1824 to 1835) and Chancellor of South Carolina in 1835. In 1846, he was elected as a Democrat to the 62nd South Carolina Governor, serving until 1846. After leaving office, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
