Del Norte Prospector dated November 7, 1947
Juan D. Montoya, son of one of Del Norte’s early pioneers, Louie Montoya, big time sheepman of the upper valley, died Friday after a short illness.
Funeral services were held at the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church Tuesday morning.
Juan ran a big band of sheep in the district for many years, before retiring to town life. He was one of the colorful characters of the 1890s and early 1900s in this community—swashbuckling, friendly, adventurous, and successful.
He was born March 14, 1869 at Huerfano, Colorado, and came to the valley when a lad.
He is survived by two sons, four daughters, 32 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

There is a discrepancy between the date of birth given in the newspaper and that on the tombstone. I added the month and day given in the paper, but left the year as it is inscribed on the tombstone. pwc
