U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Educated in academics, he studied law, was admitted in 1845 and commenced to practice law in Franklin, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives (1850-52, 1865-66) and a member of the New Hampshire State Senate, (1857-58). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving until 1875. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1883, serving until his death at age 66.
