Sacred
to the memory of
Governor Hardin Richard Runnels
Born August 30, 1820
Died December 25, 1873
A native of Mississippi. He removed to Texas in 1842.
By his public spirit and stern integrity
he won the confidence of the people,
who elected him to the highest positions
Legislative and Executive
that they had to bestow.
Filling all these with honor to himself
and benefits to the commonwealth,
no finger can point to a shadow of corruption
upon his extended public record.
