Texas Governor. He moved from Kentucky to Seguin, Texas in the 1850s, and in 1858 he was elected as the Mayor of Seguin. During the Civil War, he served in thr Confederate Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the 8th Texas Infantry regiment. While serving as a member of Texas state legislature, he fought against land grants for railroad companies, earning him the nickname of "Oxcart John." He was elected as the Governor of Texas in 1883, serving until 1887.
