U.S. Senator. Graduating from the University of North Carolina, in 1813, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1815 but did not practice. Instead he engaged in agriculture as a planter. He was a member of the North Carolina House of Commons, (1815-17, 23) and a member of North Carolina State Senate, (1828-29). In 1829, he was elected as a Jacksonian, to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Branch and serving until resignation in 1840. He was again a member of North Carolina State Senate, (1842, 58-60, 68). Retiring from politics, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, until his death at age 75.
