Governor of Mississippi. As a young attorney in Columbus, Tucker, a Democrat, was elected in 1831 to the Mississippi Legislature as Lowndes County's first Representative. After four years in the House of Representatives, he served as State Senator until being elected Governor in 1841, defeating the Whig candidate, D.O. Shattuck, by only eight votes. Tucker's single term as Governor (1842-1844) was turbulent, including an embezzlement scandal when the State Treasurer embezzled $45,000 and escaped to Canada. Although Tucker was cleared of any responsibility for the treasury scandal, he chose not to run for reelection. He did, however, successfully run for the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served one term before retiring to Cottonwood, his plantation in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana.
