US Senator. Born in Jonesboro, Tennessee, he attended the Martins Creek Academy, apprenticed to the printer’s trade, moved to Bakersville, North Carolina, in 1873 and became joint editor-owner of the Roan Mountain Republican. He was a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives (1884, 1886, 1890), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1889, commenced to practice law in Marshall, North Carolina and was president of the North Carolina Protective Tariff League in 1891. In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Zebulon B. Vance, was reelected and served until 1903. After his term, he was justice of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia, (1903-04) and Judge of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals, Fourth Judicial Circuit from 1904 until his death at age 63 in Asheville, North Carolina.
