U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Seminole War in 1818, he studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Jasper, Tennessee. Entering politics, he was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1828-37). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth, Twenty-sixth, and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843. He then was elected to the United States Senate, serving (1845-51). After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
