U.S. Congressman. He attended Mercer University, graduated from the law department of the University of Georgia, in 1897, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Fort Gaines, Georgia, in 1898. He was superintendent of the public schools in Coleman, Georgia, (1897-98), Captain of Company D, 4th Infantry, Georgia State Troops, (1899-1902) and solicitor of the Clay County Court, (1900-01). In addition, he was judge of the Clay County Court, (1901-05), served as referee in bankruptcy for the western division of the northern district of Georgia, (1906-12) and solicitor general of the Pataula judicial circuit, (1913-32). In 1932, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles R. Crisp, elected to the Seventy-third Congress and the Seventy-fourth Congress, serving until 1937. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he lived in retirement until his death at age 85.
