Georgia Governor. He graduated from the Citadel, South Carolina, in 1929 and taught school at Randolph-Macon Academy Virginia, (1929-33). Moving to Georgia, he was editor of the Bainbridge Post-Searchlight and served as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, (1934-36). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in command of a unit in New Guinea. After the war, he served as Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, (1948-55) and was elected as a Democrat the 72nd Governor of Georgia, serving (1955-59). During his tenure, the state initiated educational television programming for schools, additional classrooms were added to the public school system, 3,000 new teachers were hired, new public health centers were established and child services were all improved. After leaving office, he returned to his newspaper business until his death from lung cancer, at age 74.
