MUNCIE--Carl F. Lucas, 84, former Muncie Fire Chief, passed away Saturday morning, February 9, 2008 at Ball Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 29, 1923 in Muncie, the son of Reba Roberta (Wiggerly) Lucas and Carl Duncan Lucas. Carl lived most of his life in the Muncie area and graduated from Central High School in 1941 and later attended Notre Dame University.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the USS St. Louis, a light cruiser and on the USS Tranquility, a hospital ship from 1942 to 1945.

Carl began his firefighter career with the Muncie Fire Department on September 1, 1953. He served as a training officer, sergeant, captain, was Deputy Chief from 1966 through 1967, and was Fire Chief from 1980 through 1983 and retired on December 31, 1987.

He was a member of the Corinth Congregational Christian Church, American Legion Post #19, V.F.W. Post 651, and the U.S. Navy Memorial.

Survivors include his wife, Betty J. (Hatfield) Lucas, who he married March 24, 1950; five sons, Gary L. Lucas (wife-Lynn), Muncie, William F. Lucas (wife-Janell), Gaston, Michael Lucas (fiancee-Debbie), Muncie, Terry D. Lucas (wife-Ruth L.), Muncie, and Robert C. Lucas (wife-Kathy), Muncie; one sister, Louvena Pittenger, Muncie; 12 grandchildren, Christy Myers (husband-Lance), Muncie, Brad Lucas (wife-Jamie), Muncie, Kim Boozier (husband-Steve), Hartford City, Mark Lucas (wife-Holly), Muncie, Heather Lucas, Greenfield, Jonathan R. Lucas, stationed in Iraq with the U.S. Army, Lisa D. Lucas, Muncie, Rachel Buckmaster, Indianapolis, Joshua Buckmaster, Kissimmee, FL, Jacob R. Lucas, Muncie, Candice Cox, Muncie, and Rachael Cox, Muncie; six great-grandchildren, Chase Myers, Reed Myers, Maci Lucas, Mackenzie Crawford, Thomas Boozier, and Haven Lucas Buckmaster; one aunt, Lula Lykins, Yorktown; his sister-in-law, Harriett Mulhleman; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter, Jill Lucas.

Services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Pastor Junior Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie, with military rites by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.

Family and friends may call at the mortuary from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday or after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
