Son of Edgar L. & Mary Hazel (Aylor) Gilbert, he was the second of five children, born on a farm 3 miles northeast of Table Rock. He attended Miller rural school Dist.#49 and High School in Table Rock, graduating in 1936.

He farmed with his father until 1941 when he went to California to work in the Lockheed airplane plant to aid the war effort. He was drafted in July 1944, trained at Camp Roberts in California before he was sent to France in January of 1945. He served with the 79th Division 313 Infantry and was front line in the Rhine crossing. He served as a border guard until being discharged and returning home in May of 1946. He returned to Pawnee County where he farmed with his father and later on his own.

Kenneth married Darlene Clark in 1948 and they farmed near Table Rock until cancer took her life in 1975. He became re-acquainted with Lucille (Hendrix) Clark, a childhood friend and neighbor. She too had lost he mate and the two wed in 1976 and had 9 happy years before she succumbed to cancer in 1985. Kenny continued to live on the farm south of Table Rock and in 1987 married Ida Kanel and moved to her home south of Humboldt where he enjoyed helping her two sons with their farming operation until his health failed.

Kenny was a member of the Table Rock Methodist Church and Brown-Hayes Legion Post#289. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking and many family members have been recipients of his handiwork. Ida entered Colonial Acres Nursing Home in October of 2008 and Kenny visited her faithfully, tended the yard and took over the housekeeping duties. In July of 2010, Kenny was diagnosed with bone cancer and himself became a resident of Colonial Acres. He passed away there October 8, 2011, having reached the age of 93 years, 8 months and 1 day.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives Darlene and Lucille; brothers George and Dwaine; sister-in-law Erma Gilbert; step-daughter Patty Clark, and a step-daughter Lisa (McNealy) Schaardt.

He is survived by his wife Ida Gilbert; brother Elmer "Pete" Gilbert; sister Dorothy Penkava.
