Civil War Indiana Governor, US Senator. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Indiana in 1861, the as 14th Governor of Indiana from January 16, 1861 to January 23, 1867. He then was elected as a Senator from Indiana to the United States Senate, serving from 1867 to 1877. He was a candidate for Republican nomination for President in 1876.
