U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Louisiana State University, in 1895, from the law department of Tulane University, in 1897, was admitted to the bar in 1898 and commenced to practice law in Alexandria, Louisiana. He was a member of the board of supervisors of Louisiana State University and elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James B. Aswell, serving (1931-33). Not seeking reelection, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1933 and served until his death.
