He served as Kentucky's Secretary of State from 1804 to 1806, then was elected as a Republican to represent Kentucky's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1807 to 1809. He then served as an Appeals Court Judge and in the Kentucky State Legislature before being elected as a Senator from Kentucky to the United States Senate in 1824. He served a single term from 1865 to 1831, and was defeated in his attempt to secure re-election by Henry Clay.
