John Van Beuren Scarborough, the son of William W. and Sarah (Van Beuren) Scarborough, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, August 1, 1859, and was fitted for college at Dr. Soule's Private School, Cincinnati, Ohio. After graduation, he studied law for one year, 1881-1882, at the Law School of Cincinnati College. Thereafter he spent some time on his ranch in the West, returning to reside in Cincinnati, where he managed the Scarborough Estates. Mr. Scarborough died of heart disease, November 7, 1919, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The internment was in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Mr. Scarborough was President of the Spring Grove Cemetery Association, and a member of the Ohio Board of State Charities. He was a trustee of the Cincinnati Sinking Fund, 1901-1903; Vice-President of the Cincinnati Zoological Society; a member and director of numerous companies, and a member and officer of a number of clubs. During World War I, he served as a member of the Ohio Branch of the Council of National Defense. In his will, Mr. Scarborough left $20,000 to his Alma mater, Amherst College. Mr. Scarborough was unmarried.
