NAPLES, Fla. - John R. Austin, formerly of Burlington, died in Naples, Fla. on Feb. 9, 2011.

He was the grandson of Warren R. Austin who was a Vermont Senator and then was appointed by President Truman as the First Ambassador to the United Nations.

John graduated from Burlington High School, where he was on the ski team in all four events for four years. He went on to graduate from Syracuse University with a degree in Fine Arts. He continued his ski racing in all four events for Syracuse. John then served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In the 1960's John moved back to Burlington with his family where he started an interior design business. He was a member of NSID (National Society of Interior Designers). John designed the interiors of many homes, ski areas and golf clubs, from Burlington to Boston, Mass. to New York state. After many years in Burlington, John moved to Naples, Fla. where he continued his design work in landscape architecture and waterfalls. While he did many private homes, he also did large designs for commercial buildings. This included the design of waterfalls on the famous Boca West golf course. John was also an accomplished potter and enjoyed many hours sitting by his pool making gifts for his family. John had a love for the water and fishing. When he was not working, he could be found out in his boat in the gulf, fishing and enjoying the rich wildlife of the Everglades. He also loved duck hunting, especially on Lake Champlain. While living in Burlington, John was a member of the Burlington Country Club, the Ethan Allen Club and the First Congregational Church.

He was predeceased by his son, John Richard Austin, Jr.

John is survived by his daughter, Wendy Lee Austin of Boston, Mass.; his daughter, Laura Lee Austin Peduzzi of Barre; and two stepsons, Aaron Blaise of Jensen Beach, Fla. and Travis Blaise of Orlando, Fla.

A memorial service will be held in Burlington at Lakeview Cemetery on Oct. 22, 2011, at 11 a.m.

He will be buried in the Austin plot next to his son, John Jr.
