U.S. Senator. He studied law, admitted to the bar, practiced in Virginia and was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1800-02). Moving to Vincennes, Indiana, in 1804, he practiced law, appointed chancellor of Indiana Territory in 1807 and appointed Major in the Territorial Militia in 1807. During the War of 1812, he served as an Adjutant General in the U.S. Army. Upon the admission of Indiana as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the U.S. Senate and reelected as an Adams-Clay Republican, serving (1816-25). After leaving the Senate, he lived in retirement until his death.
