US Congressman, US Senator. He graduating from Kennedy Business College in 1897 and during the Spanish-American War, he served as a Corporal in Company K, Provisional Regiment, US Army. After the war, he graduated from the Northern Indiana Law School in 1901, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Rushville, Illinois. He was City Attorney of Rushville, (1903-07) treasurer of Rushville Union Schools, (1906-08) and Judge of Schuyler County, (1906-10). He also was special inheritance-tax attorney of Illinois, (1913-17) and a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, (1917-21). In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second Congress, serving until 1933, when he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1939. He did not run for re-election and returned to his law practice until his death at age 64.
