US Senator. He served in a number of Chicago, Illinois and state offices, most notably as Chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission when he was appointed in 1938 as a Democratic Senator from Illinois to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator J. Hamilton Lewis. He served from April 14, 1939 to November 21, 1940, and was succeeded by Senator Charles Wayland Brooks, who had been duly elected to fill the seat.
