U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of the South in 1879, from the law department of the University of Virginia in 1881, and was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Greenville, Mississippi. In 1910, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Anselm J. McLaurin, serving until 1913. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was the director of the Federal Reserve Board branch at St. Louis, Missouri from 1914 until his death from a heart attack.
