U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1890 and engaged in the general insurance business and banking at Cedartown, Georgia. He served as private secretary to U.S. Senator Alexander S. Clay, (1904-09), a member of the Georgia State Senate, (1911-12), Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, (1913-15). In addition, he was a member of the Federal Trade Commission, Acting Secretary of the Department of Commerce, (1913-15) and a member of the Federal Trade Commission, (1915-18). In 1919, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until his death from a heart attack.
