U.S. Congressman. Employed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, he moved to Piedmont, West Virginia, in 1854. There he also engaged in the mercantile business, lumbering, banking, mining, plus was a member of the Virginia Democratic State executive committee, (1876-1907) and a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1898-1900). In 1905, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Alston G. Dayton, serving until 1907. Not a candidate for reelection, he engaged in agricultural and coal mining pursuits until his death at age 83. The town of Thomas, West Virginia, is named in his honor.
