U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1835, moved to Indiana and practiced medicine in Mishawaka, until 1847. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in South Bend, Indiana. He held several local offices and was a member of the Indiana State Senate in 1850. In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was pointed by President Pierce Attorney General of the Territory of Minnesota, in 1855. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he organized and was Colonel in command of the 48th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he was a collector of Internal Revenue, (1865-70) and Indiana State Secretary, from 1870, until his death from a heart condition at age 61.
