U.S. Congressman, Senator. A member of the Republican party, he served in the House of Representatives from California from 1869 to 1873 and in the Senate from 1873 to 1879. He is best known for writing the bill that created the Transcontinental Railroad. He also introduced a bill for Women's Suffrage in 1878 which was not passed but eventually led to the passage of the 19th Amendment.

Gravesite Details

Moved from Laurel Hill Cemetery in SF upon its closure. Ashes said to have been spread at his mining claim on Quaker Hill.
