U.S. Senator. He was editor-publisher of the True American of Trenton newspaper, a clerk in the New Jersey State General Assembly, in 1804, served as a Captain Judge Advocate of the Hunterdon Brigade, New Jersey Militia, in 1806, surrogate of Hunterdon County in 1808 and a member of the New Jersey State General Assembly, (1809-11). He also was Brigadier General of New Jersey, (1810-12, 14) and a Captain in the 3rd Regiment, New Jersey Militia, in 1814. In 1815, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1821. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed postmaster of Trenton, New Jersey and served until his death.
