U.S. Senator. He graduated from the College of New Jersey, in 1821, studied law was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced to practice law in Salem, New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly in 1837, New Jersey State Attorney, (1838-41) and a member of the State constitutional convention in 1844 and a professor at the Princeton Law School, (1847-55). In 1862, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John R. Thomson, serving until 1863. Not a candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, in 1863 and served until his death at 66.
